Police Fail 102 Australian Women Killed By Men in 2024

This post was originally published in October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As you know, in Australia, we have been in a femicide epidemic since 2022.

Every 4 days in Australia in 2024, another woman is murdered by a man.

Usually a man she knows.

Usually, she is a First Nations woman, or a disabled woman, who are both attacked and murdered at much higher rates than others.

Almost always, the attacker is a straight, white male.

This matters. It matters so much.

No one deserves to be brutally murdered, like these women have been. No one.

And especially as you will see below, most of these murders could have been easily prevented by police, courts, and the government.

So we have to condemn men’s violence against women, by talking about them until it changes.

Until the governments believe us, and act on it.

Until the police believe us, and act on it.

Until the courts believe us, and act on it.

Today, I’ll be focussing on the ways the police in every state and territory across Australia has been failing women, children, women of colour, non-binary people, trans people, queer people, etc.

This choice to focus on the police is validated by the fact that so many states’ police forces tried in 2024 to suppress the results of internal and external investigations that showed they were failing DFV victims.

For example, it was uncovered in October 2024 that Queensland Police Service (QPS) had deliberately blocked “damaging” reports about their Service Delivery Program’s dealings with DFV victims. Internal emails about Queensland Police’s failure were confirmed by direct quotes from their own leadership.

Throughout this post, I’ve linked to reports about police failing to catch male killers and failing to protect the women and children whom these killers targeted.

What you need to know about women’s lives and men’s violence while reading this article

I want to honour the lives of the 102 women killed by men in 2024, because they are so much more than just statistics.

Each of them were loved by family and friends.

I have included links to my main sources for this information, including the amazing resources created by journalist Sherele Moody. I have tried to source only articles that included names and photographs after seeking consent from the families of these women; however, the media doesn’t always do this, so I couldn’t always find respectful sources. If you are a First Nations reader, please know that some of the articles I’ve linked to include photographs of the women who were killed.

I have also made my best attempt to uncover the correct gender identity and pronouns for each of these people, and after more than 2 days of research, I have reached the limits of what I can find out online for free. If you find any misgendering errors, please let me know and I will update this article with sincere apologies. I want to stop men’s violence against all humans, whether they are women, children, people of colour, non-binary people, trans people, other men, etc.

Finally, I could not write about men’s violence against women in Australia without acknowledging the atrocities that male political leaders, male soldiers, male police, and other men are committing right now across the world. War, genocide, and other violence against women continues unchecked in Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan, Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, and many more countries as I write this.

What can I do to stop domestic violence in Australia?

For those who cannot read about injustice without acting on it – like me – I recommend these actions:

  • If you’re a man, I want to see you posting about domestic violence issues. I firmly believe all men should be actively working to prevent men’s violence against women and children, and demanding systemic changes from the government so that victim-survivors can leave and stay safe. What about “not all men”? No. Until all men are actively campaigning to stop men’s violence … it is all men.
  • Donate to your local DV support services, or to the families. Women’s shelters, domestic violence shelters, and DV support services are all ridiculously underfunded by local, state, and federal governments. In 2024 alone, many DV shelters have had to close their doors, including the one that was controversially closed by the Perth Mayor and WA Premier. If you can afford it, give a little – every little bit helps, and it’s tax-deductible. If you prefer to donate directly to the families of these 63+ women, you can find and donate to their GoFundMe campaigns, to help them raise money for funeral or memorial services.
  • Email your federal and state Members of Parliament (MP). You can find the contact details for Queensland MPs easily, and you can usually find contact details for most federal Senators and MPs. Ask them which women’s shelters and women’s legal services they are directly funding, and demand that they pay more. Tell them to increase staffing at courthouses, so that victim-survivors can get DV protection orders faster. In Queensland, it currently takes up to 2 years to get a protection order that only lasts 5 years. Australia has a budget surplus in 2024 – THE GOVERNMENT CAN AFFORD TO DO BETTER!
  • Send a complaint to Centrelink, who routinely denies DV victim-survivors the financial help they need: the Crisis Payment for Extreme Circumstances Family and Domestic Violence, and the separate Escaping Violence Payment (EVP) program. Tell Centrelink to hire more people for their DV section and their Families Line. Because DV victim-survivors should be waiting on the phone for hours every day for weeks, just to hear, when they finally reach the top of the queue, “We can’t help you.” It’s not good enough. Australia’s budget surplus means the government – through Services Australia and Centrelink – can afford to help more vulnerable women and children than they do.
  • Send a complaint to the Police Commissioner in your state or territory about one of the 63+ women who have died this year so far. Ask the commissioner what they are doing today to prevent any other women dying in their state or territory. Because as you will see from the below records, many of these women would still be alive today if police would just do their damn jobs.
  • If you know a lawyer or have a lawyer, ask them how many pro bono cases they take on. Every lawyer in Australia should be helping at least one domestic violence victim-survivor with trying to get protection orders, parenting orders, Victim Assist payments, home loan contracts, workplace harassment suits, Wills and estates, and more. All of these factors can force victims to stay with violent men or stay in bad situations, unless they have the money to hire a lawyer – which most women do not.
  • If you’re worried about someone you know, phone your local police station and ask to speak to a sergeant. Ask them to make a “welfare check” and put it on record that you have reported concerns about someone’s violence or concerns for someone’s safety. Our taxpayer dollars are paying these cops’ salaries. It is literally their job to go and check that violent men are staying away from women and children like they should be. As you’ll see in the article below, most of these women’s bodies were only discovered because friends and family told police to go look.
  • Worried for your own safety? Call 000 in an emergency. Or call the 24/7 DV counselling line 1800 RESPECT. First Nations women can call 13YARN Crisis Supporters 24/7 on 13 92 76, for help that’s designed by mob for mob. And even if the police haven’t been helpful before, report every incident to them on 000 or PoliceLink, and ask them for an incident report number. Queensland Police has a “vulnerable person” SMS service you can register for, so you can text them to make a report.

The 102 women killed by men in 2024 (in chronological order)

  1. Janice Walker: Janice was 68 years old and lived in Urangan, Hervey Bay, QLD. Neighbours said Janice was quiet and spent a lot of time sitting on her balcony. Because of her chronic health problems, Janice relied on her long-term partner as her primary carer for many of her daily needs.
Janice Walker was murdered on 2 January 2024, by her partner, Bryan Monk (70 years old). After murdering Janice, he then took the coward’s way out and committed suicide instead of facing charges. Janice Walker was the first known female victim of violence in Australia for 2024.
After she was murdered, the media speculated that maybe she asked for a mercy killing, but there was no evidence of this.
    See reports about Janice Walker.
  2. Nerol Doble: Nerol Doble was a fucking hero in my eyes. For the last few years, she told family and friends that instead of presents, she wanted them to donate to charities for her birthday. In 2022, she asked people to donate to Full Stop Australia, the national DFV organisation. Nerol was 65 years old and lived in Bribbaree, NSW.
Nerol Doble was attacked on 7 January 2024 and died on 8 January 2024. Her son, Shannon Doble (42), has been charged with murdering her and arson of her home.
This was preventable. Bribaree is a small town, which just 144 people living there in 2021. Someone must have known Shannon Doble was abusing his mum, especially when she kept asking them to donate to DFV charities.
    See reports about Nerol Doble.
  3. Alison (Ali) Robinson: Ali was a mother, daughter, sisty, aunty, cousin. Her sister said, “Alison was a kind soul – she was a mother, daughter, sister, aunty, cousin.” and “She had a very sad life and suffered through so much … but she still took the time to help people whenever she could.” She was 39 years old and lived in Glenorchy, Tasmania (TAS).
Ali Robinson was murdered on 5 January 2024. David George Evans (40 years old), has been charged with murdering her, arson on her home, and stealing her car.
    See reports about Ali Robinson.
  4. Keira Marshall: Keira was a loving mum of 2 children, and was 29 years old. Her friend Tarli Salter said, “She was a loving caring mother. She had her struggles in life but she never let them define her.”
Keira Marshall was murdered on 28 January 2024 in Morayfield, QLD (not her home). Ryan Johnson (18 years old) has been charged with murdering her.
See reports about Keira and court appearances.
  5. Alana Martin: Alana was a mum of 4 who enjoyed posting about family, fitness, and enjoying life, and was loved by her family and community. She was 30 years old and lived in Owanyilla, on the Fraser Coast, QLD. She had just celebrated her eldest son starting high school and her youngest son starting kindy.
Alana Martin was murdered on 28 January 2024. Her ex-partner, Daniel Noel Holm (43 years old), confessed to Maryborough Police that he killed her, and he has been charged with murdering her. The police said her children were in the house at the time he killed her.
    See reports about Alana Martin.
  6. Bonnie Lee Anderson: Bonnie was a mum of 6, and a vibrant woman adored by family and friends. She was 39 years old and lived in Canberra, ACT. Her sister said, “She had a good heart. She had good friends. We were part of an awesome community.”
Bonnie Lee Anderson died in hospital on 26 January 2024, after being attacked and tortured by her ex-partner, Daryl Robertson (53 years old), in September 2022. Daryl Robertson was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to more than 27 years in jail. He appealed his sentence, but this was thankfully rejected by the court.
    See reports about Bonnie.
  7. Vyleen White: Vyleen was a retired teacher, and before that she was an electrical tradie. She was a loving grandmother, and her daughter Cindy Micallef says she was a selfless woman who went out of her way to help people in need. She was about to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary, and she had a deeep faith. She loved her cat, Chloe, gardening, and she did a great Donald Duck impression. She was 70 years old and lived in Ipswich, QLD.
Vyleen White was murdered on 3 February 2024. When she was murdered, she was just shopping with her 6-year-old granddaughter, who had to call for help. I feel for the trauma this poor child must be going through.
A 16-year-old young man has been charged with murdering her, and the four other young men in his group have been charged with related offences. These cowardly young men stole Vyleen’s car keys, then killed her for no reason. Why would anyone steal an old woman’s car, then abandon it right away? Why did they kill Vyleen when they already had her car keys? It’s infuriating. Yet Vyleen’s daughter, Cindy, bravely continues to urge the public not to make this into a racist, divisive incident.
    See reports about Vyleen White.
  8. Antoinette “Toni” Dianne Tozer: Known to family as Toni, Antoinette was a beloved Nana to 4 grandkids. She was 76 years old and lived in Rosewater, Adelaide, South Australia (SA).
Antoinette Dianne Tozer and her son, Steve Tozer (55 years old), were murdered on 3 February 2024. Their neighbour, Joe Campbell (43 years old), was arrested and charged with murdering them.
See reports about Antoinette Tozer and the memorial death notice for Toni.
  9. Donna Baraket: Donna was 63 years old and ran a boarding house in Tweed Heads, on the QLD-NSW border.
Donna Baraket was murdered on 7 February 2024. Connor Bullus (25), was charged with murdering her. He had been a lodger in Donna’s home until he was evicted. Two weeks later, he was charged with murdered her.
    See reports about Donna Baraket.
  10. Samira Kamaleddine: Samira was a mum and her family was by her side when she died. She was 81 years old and lived in Sydney, NSW.
Samira Kamaleddine was murdered through an attack on 4 January 2024; she died a month later from these injuries on 9 February 2024. While she was in Bankstown Hospital, another patient who was a stranger, Richard Po Lun Lim (29 years old), attacked her and her two daughters (aged 63 and 58 years old). A month later, Samira died in Liverpool Hospital, from the violent injuries Richard Lim committed against her. Richard Lim has been charged with murdering her.
Adding insult to injury, NSW Police initially failed to charge Richard Lim properly; they initially charged him with assault. Then, even once they decided to press charges for murder, they failed to properly file the murder charge before the court hearing. NSW Magistrate Susan MacIntyre had to tell them to go file it properly. This just demonstrates how much NSW Police does not care about preventing or punishing men’s violence against women.
    See reports about Samira Kamaleddine.
  11. Amarjit Kaur Sardar: Amarjit had two teenaged children. She was 41 years old and she lived and worked on a farm in Woodhill, outside of Brisbane, QLD.
Amarjit Kaur Sardar was murdered on 15 February 2024. Her husband, Yadwinder Singh (44 years old) has been charged with murdering her and interfering with her corpse. He called 000 and claimed Amarjit had died in a tractor accident (a sugarcane slasher). At the time Amarjit was murdered, she had been seeking support from a local DFV support service.
This should have been prevented. Police had visited multiple times for multiple reports of domestic violence and abuse. They knew what Yadwinder Singh was doing to her, but they never arrested him.
See reports about Amarjit Kaur Sardar.
  12. Rebecca Young: Rebecca was a loving mum of 5 children, and a disability support worker. She was 42 years old and had just recently moved into her home in Ballarat, Victoria.
Rebecca Young was murdered on 16 February 2024. Her partner, Ian Butler (55 years old), killed her, then committed suicide to avoid charges for murdering her. Two of Rebecca’s children were at home when Ian Butler murdered her. Rebecca’s neighbours told the police and the media that it was a “volatile relationship”. Two of Rebecca’s children were at home when Ian Butler murdered her.
This should have been prevented. Victorian Police knew Ian Butler had links to outlaw bikie gang the Bandidos, and that he had been violent before. In fact, Ian Butler made his biker identity very public on social media. It’s unknown why they did nothing until after he murdered Rebecca. Or why they have been completely unable to keep women from being murdered by men, from the 1960s to now.
    See reports about Rebecca Young.
  13. Min (Sue) Cho: Min Cho (Korean name Jo Min, known as Sue) was 41 years old and was a mum who worked for several businesses. She lived in Sydney, NSW, with her husband Stephen (39 years old, Korean name Hyunsoo Jo) who worked for a construction firm, and their son Benjamin (7 years old).
Min Cho, Stephen, and Benjamin were all murdered on 19 February 2024. Benjamin’s martial arts instructor, Kwong Kyung Yoo (49 years old, Korean name Yoo Gwang-gyeong), has been charged with murdering them.
The media immediately released damaging rumours that the murderer was motivated by a “love triangle”, which is insane because it implied Min could have prevented this somehow. There are no excuses for Kwong Kyung Yoo destroying this family. He even tried to cover it up by sending a text message to his students at Lion’s Taekwondo and Martial Arts studio, saying he had been in a car accident and would not be able to lead classes that day, then lied to police that he had been injured at a supermarket. What a coward.
See reports about Min Cho (Jo Min).
  14. Sophie-Lee Fullagar: Sophie-Lee was 24 years old and loved to sing. Her family and friends say she was strong and had “the sweetest nature, the biggest heart”. Sophie’s boyfriend, Jay Bee, said she was a “warrior” and a “beautiful soul”. They had often spent time together looking for her favourite flower, frangipanis. She split her time living between her mum’s home in Ballina (NSW) and Jay’s home in Byron Bay (NSW).
Sophie-Lee Fullagar was murdered on 24 February 2024, in Wardell, NSW, in what was initially called a car accident. Alec St Clair (29 years old) was charged with murdering her and the three men who were in the ute with her (Mark Dodds, Benjamin Watego, and James Doherty), after allegedly trying to rob them. Alec St Clair was known to their group of friends, and police have called it a “targeted attack”.
Donate to Sophie-Lee’s family and friends’ GoFundMe or see reports about Sophie-Lee Fullagar.
  15. Natasha Nibizi: Natasha was a loving mum of 4 young children, was 29 years old, and lived in Doolandella, QLD. She had recently come back from a holiday with her partner. Thankfully, the children were with a friend when Natasha died.
Natasha Nibizi was murdered on 27 February 2024. Her ex-partner, referred to by some media as her husband, Habibullah Bayat (34 years old, also called Habib), asked her to visit him so they could talk. When she arrived, he is reported to have killed her and then committed suicide to avoid being charged with murdering her.
This should have been prevented. Habib Bayat had already been convincted of domestic violence in Townsville and Brisbane, including breaching a domestic violence order against him in 2022. Queensland Police in both cities knew he was a violent criminal.
And the courts knew he was violent. Habibullah Bayat was facing multiple ongoing cases against him – cases involving domestic violence by him – in the Queensland Magistrates Courts in Townsville and Brisbane, and the Family Court (Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia). Six of the charges against him were finalised in Brisbane Magistrates Court on the same day he killed himself – too late to protect Natasha.
The Queensland courts are too damn slow. In the Brisbane Magistrates Court, it currently takes up to 2 years to get a DV protection order that only lasts 5 years. In the Queensland Family Court, it takes multiple years to get parenting orders or a DFV protection order. They’re so inefficient that it’s actually impossible for them to keep anyone safe. And yet, Queensland Police refuse to act unless victims have an active DVO (domestic violence order) granted by the courts, a.k.a. an IPO (intervention protection order)… Make it make sense.
    See reports about Natasha Nibizi.
  16. Samantha Murphy: Samantha was a dedicated mum of 3 children, and ran a small business with her husband, Mick (Michael). She was about to celebrate her 27th wedding anniversary on 21 February 2024, says Mick. She was 51 years old and lived in Ballarat, Victoria. Her friend Virginia O’Loughlan said, “Sam is the most strong woman I know and I’m not just talking about mind, I’m also talking about body.”
Samantha Murphy was murdered on 4 February 2024, while she was enjoying her morning run in Woowookarung Regional Park. A stranger to her, Patrick Stephenson (22 years old), has been charged with murdering her. On 29 May 2024, Samantha’s mobile phone and wallet was found near Buninyong. Patrick Stephenson has still failed to reveal to police where he put Samantha’s body.
    See reports about Samantha Murphy.
  17. Woman, NT, 26: This First Nations woman (name not used for Sorry Business protocols) was 26 years old and lived in the Northern Territory. She was killed by attack in Kununurra on 11 September 2023, and died on 28 February in Royal Darwin Hospital. Her ex-partner, David Junior Tax (27 years old), has been charged with murdering her, and with breaching a DV restraining order.
This was preventable. There was a DV protection order in place. NT Police knew David Junior Tax had been violent against her before, and that she was vulnerable. In fact, statistics from the Australian Institute of Criminology show Indigenous women are 8 times more likely than other women to be killed in Australia, and that it is often caused by domestic violence. To translate, this means First Nations women are being killed by men in Australia at a crazy, tragic rate.
See reports about this NT woman.
  18. Woman, WA, 42: This woman was 42 years old, was a loving single mum for her child, and had moved here from China. Some said she worked in the adult industry and was trying to find a way out, but seemed to be trapped by poverty, having English as a second language, and being a single parent.
This woman was murdered on 4 February 2024 in Ascot, Perth, Western Australia. Two men, Joondalup man Qian Liu (28 years old) and an unnamed Baldivis man (24 years old), have been charged with murdering her. It appears WA Police waited almost 3 months to announce that she had been murdered.
See reports about this WA woman’s murder.
  19. Wendy Hansen: Wendy was a local businesswoman and a loving grandmother to at least 4 grandkids. She was 63 years old and lived in Monto, near Bundaberg, QLD. On 29 February 2024, Wendy went for a drive through the Sunshine Coast, QLD, and disappeared. Four months later in June 2024, her body was found in the beach-dune bushlands in Coffs Harbour, NSW. NSW Police confirmed it was murder, but they still have not found or charged anyone with murdering her as of 29 August 2024.
    See reports about Wendy Hansen.
  20. Wendy Lee George: Wendy was 60 years old and lived in Evans Head, NSW, and tragically, that is all I have been able to find out about her life online. Dear media – why have you told us so much about Wendy’s killer, but nothing about Wendy herself? That’s misogyny, my dudes.
Wendy Lee George was murdered on 8 March 2024. Her son Jeramie Massie (39 years old) has been charged with murdering her.
This should have been prevented. In June 2022, Jeramie Massie was convicted of assaulting a woman, and an apprehended violence order (AVO, a type of DV protection order) was made against him. I am not sure whether that woman was Wendy or not, from reading the reports. Either way, NSW Police knew Jeramie Massie was violent. The NSW courts knew Jeramie Massie was violent. But they didn’t stop him from murdering his mum, Wendy Lee George.
See reports about Wendy Lee George.
  21. Chaithanya Swetha Madhagani: Known as Swetha, she was an engineer and a loving mum. She was 35 years old and lived in southwestern Melbourne, Victoria.
Chaithanya Swetha Madhagani was murdered on 9 March 2024. Swetha’s husband, Ashok Raj Varikuppala, killed her, put her body in a wheelie bin, then flew back to India. From India, he contacted her family back in Victoria and confessed that he had murdered her. He left their son with Swetha’s family in India.
    See reports about Swetha Madhagani.
  22. Mauwa (Melanie) Kizenga: Melanie had just moved 3,400km back to Perth from Melbourne earlier this year, and she was just about to begin a new job in mining. She was only 22 years old, but she was one of the main breadwinners for her family, and she was moving to Perth to help take care of her mum and younger siblings. Her family moved to Australia in 2009 to escape the violent war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Everyone loved Melanie, and the African community in Perth organised a memorial vigil for 200 people to honour her together.
Mauwa Melanie Kizenga was murdered on 16 March 2024. Melanie was walking with her cousin (20 years old) on suburban streets in Balga, Perth, when Clarence Jalloh (30 years old) murdered Melanie. Clarence Jalloh knew Melanie’s cousin.
Detective Senior Sergeant Katharine Venn told the media, “We don’t have the motive for that at this time.” Really? Even though Australia is in the middle of a femicide epidemic, and Melanie was the 19th woman killed by men in Australia in just the first 3 months of the year? They don’t think the motive was maybe that Australian men hate women? That’s a motive.
See reports about Melanie Kizenga’s death and her life.
  23. Woman, WA, 66: This woman was 66 years old and was from Western Australia. She was murdered over the Easter Weekend and was found on 2 April 2024 in Fortitude Valley, QLD. Her son, Steven Rhain Pinker (42 years old), has been charged with murdering her.
I apologise that I was unable to find out this woman’s name, although she was murdered so many months ago. I hope this is an intentional choice by her family to withhold her name. Please tell me if you know more.
See reports about this WA woman.
  24. Annie Ng: Annie was from the Asian community, and was described as strong, resilient, and shy. She was receiving medical treatment for cancer, which she had been fighting for a long time. Annie was 64 years old and lived in Bulleen, Victoria.
Annie died on 9 March 2024, 10 days after her male partner attacked and critically injured her on 27 February 2024. After killing Annie, her ex-partner then killed himself, cowardly avoiding any accountability for taking her life.
Now here’s the strange part. Her male partner’s name has been withheld by the police and the authorities, and if you Google “who killed Annie Ng”, as I did, you will find no relevant results. As Sherele Moody of Femicide Watch pointed out, there was no police media release about Annie’s death, and no authorities or media told the public that she had been killed. Sadly, Annie is not the only culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) woman who was murdered by a man, and then post-humously silenced by Australian police and media, most of whom are men. Why has Annie received no justice?
    See reports about Annie Ng.
  25. Zomi Frankcom: Zomi was an Australian humanitarian aid worker who was working with the non-profit organisation World Central Kitchen in Gaza. She was 43 years old and was born in Melbourne. Her coworker and friend Aliyah (name changed for privacy) said even when conditions were horrific, “She always had a smile on her face, she smiled every day. She was also so full of patience and cared so much about her team.”
Lalzawmi Zomi Frankcom was murdered on 1 April 2024, while delivering food and supplies to displaced refugees in Gaza. She was travelling along an approved route that Israel Defense Forces had promised not to bomb, when an Israeli drone bombed them. The United Nations has made statements that Israel has deliberately targeted women and children in Palestine during the Israel-Hamas war. The United Nations has called for an international investigation into the actions of men in the Israel Defence Forces against Palestinian women and children. Zomi was not just another victim of men’s violence against women. Murdering Zomi and her coworkers from World Central Kitchen was a deliberate and evil decision to try to starve the women and children who were relying on the food and supplies they were bringing.
Zomi appears to be the second Australian woman killed by men during the Israel-Hamas war. To my knowledge, the first was Australian Galit Carbone (66 years old), who was murdered in one of the first attacks in October 2023.
    See reports about Zomi Frankcom.
  26. Hannah McGuire: Hannah was a teacher’s aide and also worked at her family’s pub. She was loved and respected by many family and friends. She was 23 years old and lived in Ballarat, Victoria.
Hannah McGuire was murdered on 5 April 2024. Two men who knew Hannah, including Lachlan Young, were both arrested and interviewed by police. Her ex-partner, Lachlan (“Lachie”) Young (21 years old at the time, now 22), has been charged with murdering her. It appears he killed her in Sebastopol, where they used to live together, then abandoned her body in a burning car, in the bushland at Scarsdale near Ballarat, Victoria. Then he tried to trick her loved ones into believing it was suicide, by posting a tribute to her on social media about how he would miss her forever. Unconscionable.
This should have been prevented. Two weeks before she was murdered, Hannah asked Victorian Police for protection, and had an intervention order put in place for her safety. Perhaps if police had been watching Lachlan Young, Hannah would still be alive.
Adding insult to injury, Lachlan Morganti (26 years old), confessed to stealing $64,000 from the GoFundMe fundraiser that he organised for Hannah’s family. This disgusting specimen was sentenced with just 400 hours of community service for his crimes of murder and fraud, instead of the 10-year sentence that would be more normal.
    See reports about Hannah McGuire.
  27. Dr Ashlee Good: Ashlee was a basketball and netball star player who grew up in Echuca, an associate at Noosa Osteopathy, and a loving mum, friend, and daughter. Ashlee was 38 years old and lived in Sydney, NSW.
Dr Ashlee Good was murdered and her 9-month-old baby was injured on 13 April 2024, by Joel Cauchi (40 years old), who went on a killing spree at Bondi Junction shopping centre, NSW. (The 4 other women killed by Joel Cauchi are listed separately in this article.) As she was dying, Ash handed her injured baby to two men, who helped to save the child’s life and tried to save her life.
This should have been prevented. Both NSW Police and Queensland Police knew that Joel Cauchi was violent, because he had been under investigation for stabbing people before, and they had failed to charge him with anything. They knew Joel Cauchi had stopped taking his schizophrenia medication against doctor’s orders. The NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb claimed the killing spree was “not an act of terror” because there was “no ideological motivation”, even though they were investigating whether he had deliberately targeted women. This is absolute rubbish. Joel Cauchi was known to hate women; he talked about it all the time. Hating women = misogyny = an ideological motivation. This was domestic terrorism, and that’s that.
But when speaking about these murders, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told Kiis FM, “There’s no sense of anything other than randomness.” That’s a flat-out lie. Men’s violence against women is not random. This domestic terrorism epidemic, with men targeting women every day, is not random. It can be prevented. It can be stopped.
See reports about Ashlee Good, and a statement by Ashlee’s family requesting that journalists not publish Ashlee’s picture without seeking their consent.
  28. Dawn Singleton: Dawn was 25 years old and lived in Sydney, NSW. She worked in ecommerce with White Fox Boutique, using her communications degree. She was engaged to marry her long-time partner. Her sister posted, “Dawnie, you embodied love. Always spoke with words of such kindness. With a smile that warmed all our hearts.”
Dawn Singleton was murdered on 13 April 2024, by Joel Cauchi (40 years old), who went on a killing spree at Bondi Junction shopping centre, NSW. (The 4 other women killed by Joel Cauchi are listed separately in this article.)
This should have been prevented. Both Queensland Police and NSW Police knew Joel Cauchi was violent, and they failed to charge him before he murdered these women. (See the notes above under Dr Ashlee Good’s name.)
    See reports about Dawn Singleton.
  29. Jade Andrea Young: Jade was 47 years old and lived in Sydney, NSW. She was a respected architect and a loving mum of 2 children. She loved cake, and would cook waffles and crepes when her daughters had friends sleep over. She took her beloved Schnauzer dog, Teddy, with her everywhere. She was shopping with her 9-year-old daughter for a birthday present when she was murdered.
Jade Young was murdered on 13 April 2024, by Joel Cauchi (40 years old), who went on a killing spree at Bondi Junction shopping centre, NSW. (The 4 other women killed by Joel Cauchi are listed separately in this article.)
Jade’s mother said, “He came prepared, he had intention, he was killer who slipped past Westfield security, making a shopping centre the most dangerous place on earth for Jade.”
This should have been prevented. Both Queensland Police and NSW Police knew Joel Cauchi was violent, and they failed to charge him before he murdered these women. (See the notes above under Dr Ashlee Good’s name.)
    See reports about Jade Young.
  30. Pikria Darchia: Pikria was an artist who had moved from Tbilisi, Georgia, to live in Maroubra, Sydney a decade ago. She was 55 years old and she loved her new life of painting, yoga, and meditation. Her son, Irakli Dvali, said she felt “safe, calm, and happy” in Sydney. She was enjoying a coffee and talking on the phone with Irakli when she died.
Pikria Darchia was murdered on 13 April 2024, by Joel Cauchi (40 years old), who went on a killing spree at Bondi Junction shopping centre, NSW. (The 4 other women killed by Joel Cauchi are listed separately in this article.)
Her son Irakli also said, “She was the toughest person I know. I want everyone to know what an extraordinary person she was. Everyone loved her.”
This should have been prevented. Both Queensland Police and NSW Police knew Joel Cauchi was violent, and they failed to charge him before he murdered these women. (See the notes above under Dr Ashlee Good’s name.)
    See reports about Pikria Darchia.
  31. Yixuan Cheng: Yixuan was a university student who had moved from China to study here. She was 27 years old and lived in Sydney, NSW. She had just finished talking to her partner when she was murdered.
Yixuan Cheng was murdered on 13 April 2024, on 13 April 2024, by Joel Cauchi (40 years old), who went on a killing spree at Bondi Junction shopping centre, NSW.
    See reports about Yixuan Cheng.
  32. Tara Marie Morrison: Tara 38 years old and was a loving mum to her son Kade (11 years old). Friends said, “She would give the shirt off her back if someone needed it more.” She lived in Broadwater, near Busselton, WA. Tara Marie Morrison was murdered on 12 April 2024. James Anthony Sorgiovanni (26 years old) and Hannah Louise Glover (28 years old), who both knew Tara, have been charged with murdering her. Police were called to a welfare check at the home. See the GoFundMe to support her son.
See reports about Tara Marie Morrison.
  33. Lesley Stillman: Lesley was a mum of four children, was an avid traveller, loved going to pilates with her friends, provided support for Guide Dogs Australia, and volunteered in palliative care for people with terminal illness. She was 67 years old and lived in Carramar, Perth, WA. She had only recently left her ex-husband, Mark Stillman (64 years old).
Lesley Stillman was murdered on 14 April 2024. Mark Stillman killed Lesley, then took the coward’s way out and committed suicide instead of facing charges for murdering her. WA Police found a confession written by the killer.
Unbelievably, WA Police then released a statement saying, “Investigators can assure the community there are no concerns for the general public’s safety.” Unless you’re a woman who tries to leave a man, I guess! I find it unconscionable that WA Police implied Lesley’s murder was an isolated incident, and not a part of Australia’s national femicide epidemic. Men killing women has never been a one-off, and at least half of the general public (women and children) are not safe. WA Police are either liars or idiots.
    See reports about Lesley Stillman.
  34. Molly Ticehurst: Molly was a loving mum to her 6-year-old son, and was a local childcare worker. She was 28 years old and lived in Forbes, NSW.
Molly Ticehurst was murdered on 22 April 2024 in Forbes, NSW. Her ex-partner Daniel Billings (29 years old) has been charged with murdering her, breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) (a type of DV protection order). He’s also charged with assaulting her 12-week-old Dachshund puppy, and destroying her property.
Adding insult to tragedy, thieves broke into Molly’s home after she was murdered, and stole many items and precious memories. They took a gold nugget pendant that looked like a woman holding a child, which Molly’s father, Tony Ticehurst, gave to her.
This should have been prevented. Daniel Billings was only able to murder Molly because a NSW magistrate released him on bail on 6 April 2024 for raping, assaulting, and stalking Molly. Why was he on bail? Why, after he committed such violent, deliberate crimes against Molly, did that magistrate allow him to walk free in the same air as her? Why do judges ever allow bail for violent crimes against vulnerable people? The NSW Government claims to have started changing the laws about bail since Molly was murdered, as well they should… But have the courts really changed?
And then after the murder, why didn’t NSW Police lock down the crime scene adequately, so that thieves couldn’t steal from Molly’s family? Part of their job is to secure a crime scene to protect a person’s belongings, not only to preserve the family’s dignity, but so that Molly’s estate can be settled legally, with finances for a funeral and the like. More than the money, Molly’s family was devastated to lose precious mementoes.
Both the Magistrates Court of NSW and NSW Police failed Molly Ticehurst and her young son.
See reports about Molly Ticehurst’s murder and the theft.
  35. Emma Bates: Emma rescued cats, and was a much-loved aunt, who often brought food or gifts to people in need, although she had serious health challenges including diabetes and mobility aids. Emma was 49 years old and lived in Cobram, Victoria. Emma’s sister spoke of Emma’s love for her 17 nieces and nephews: “They were her pride and joy and she would spend hours talking about them to everyone. She had many of their faces tattooed to her leg so she could carry them with her always.”
Emma Bates was murdered on 23 April 2024. Her neighbour, John Torney (39 years old), who knew Emma, was charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, common law assault, aggravated assault of a female, and unlawful assault. I have no idea why they didn’t charge him with murder.
This should have been prevented. The Victorian Police and the courts all knew John Torney had been violently abusing Emma Bates. In the short time he knew her, John Torney was charged with a long list of offences against Emma, including assault, before he finally killed her. Her family says she did not like him. In addition, John Torney, had previously been charged (but acquitted) of murdering 2-year-old Nikki Francis Coslovich in Mildura in 2015. The Victorian Police knew that John Torney had likely killed Nikki Francis Coslovich. They should have acted before he murdered Emma Bates in cold blood.
    See reports about Emma Bates.
  36. Erica Hay: Erica was 30 years old and a loving mum of 4 children, and lived in Warnbro, Western Australia. Her lifelong friend Amanda Broad said, “I’ll never get over her smile and her laugh; she was the goofiest person you’d ever meet.” A friend said, “She did everything for those girls, no matter how bad she was feeling. She always made sure that those girls had everything.”
In the week before Erica was murdered, her friends said they were afraid something was wrong. Amanda said she got a text from Hay asking for help, but she forgot to text back.
Erica Hay was murdered on 26 April 2024. Her boyfriend, Luke Sekkouah (35 years old) from South Kalgoorlie, has been charged with murdering her and with arson to her home. He also abducted Erica’s 3-year-old daughter from the home as it burned. Erica’s daughter had to be treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital. Erica Hay and Luke Sekkouah had only been dating for about 3 months when he attacked her.
See reports about Erica Hay’s death, the memorial vigil, and her life.
  37. Girl, 10: This unnamed girl was only 10 years old, and was killed by a man. Unfortunately, this was the only information I was able to gather about her. She died in April 2024.
  38. Joan Mary Drane: Joan was 78 years old and lived in Yangebup, Western Australia. Tragically, that is all the detail of her life that I can find online; she doesn’t appear in social media, and everything published is about her death.
Joan Mary Drane was murdered sometime between 27 April 2024 and 29 April 2024. Her son, Andre Lafayette Drane (54 years old), has been charged with murdering her.
This should have been prevented. Joan called the WA Police 3 times in the week before she was murdered (at least), but police did not act. She told police he was being abusive and violent. Police refused to attend. She called them again on 27 April, saying Andre was acting erratically, but the police ruled there was no violence, so they refused to come help her. On 28 April, the night she was murdered, she called the police again, but they ruled it a mental health incident and sent paramedics instead. The paramedics found Andre Drane was very aggressive, and were unable to contain him, so the paramedics called the police. Paramedics report calling police roughly 48 hours before Joan was murdered, but police refund to attend. A very short time after paramedics had to leave the home, Andre Drane murdered his mum, Joan.
Yet WA Police claim they don’t even know what day Joan died on.
In a despicable lack of accountability, WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said, “We make decisions on what we know at the time, not what might happen in a couple of days. … police are not the right response, where there is no violence or aggression in a mental health environment.”
What should we take away from this? #ACAB (All cops are bad.)
See reports about Joan Mary Drane.
  39. Courtney Paige Anderson: Courtney a beautiful 28-year-old woman, and she was planning to leave the highly-abusive relationship she had been trapped in for 10 years. She didn’t get that chance, because her male partner either killed her by pushing her out of their car at speed, or deliberately allowed her to die by not performing CPR and not calling emergency services. Her partner was driving dangerously. Courtney must have been terrified.
Courtney Paige Anderson was killed on 1 April 2024 on the Bruce Highway near Gladstone and Rockhampton, Queensland. A coroner’s initial assessment into her death claimed that Courtney had jumped out of the passenger seat on purpose, to commit suicide. The homicide squad was never even called in to look at the scene of the crime.
But nobody who loved Courtney believes this police story, because they know she was not suicidal. Courtney’s family and community had given the police extensive and significant evidence, including firsthand witnesses, of domestic violence by this man against Courtney.
Don Anderson, Courtney’s dad, said her partner was physically and emotionally abusive against Courtney for a decade. He says, “It is unacceptable that domestic violence and coercive control—factors Courtney endured for 10 years—were not adequately considered. Too many women die under suspicious circumstances while planning to leave or in the presence of abusive partners, only for their deaths to be quickly ruled as suicide without thorough investigation.”
Lee-Ann Rasby, Courtney’s mum, pointed out, “It is the job of the police to ensure that every detail is thoroughly investigated, and every voice, including the victim’s and their family’s, is heard.”
Courtney’s family deserves a thorough police and coronial investigation into her death – and they’ve asked for it, but have been dismissed callously.
Investigative journalist Sherele Moody points out that Courtney’s death is almost a mirror-image to the murder of Rinabel Blackmore, who died from exiting a moving vehicle in 2014. Her partner was also the one driving, and she was afraid of him. She died in hospital, and her partner was charged and convicted with her murder. Why wasn’t Courtney’s partner charged?
See reports about Courtney Paige Anderson.
  40. Bronnwyn Anne O’Gorman: Bronnwyn’s favourite places included watching the sunset over the beach in Western Australia, where she grew up. Friends and family said she was quite popular, being “bold and extroverted”, would “light up the room with her loudness”, and was “one of the kindest people”. They remembered her as a hard worker, and said she “loved hard and lived hard”. She was 40 years old and lived near Perth, Western Australia.
Despite being popular, Bronnwyn had a hard life after her brother and parents died in the 2010s, causing her significant struggles with addiction and extended family hardships. An old friend of Bronnwyn’s organised her funeral service, which was funded by Victims of Crime. Because she tragically died alone, the public trustee arranged her care in hospital before her death.
Her male partner ran over Bronnwyn Anne O’Gorman in a car on 7 April 2024 in Chidlow, WA, critically injuring her and putting her in a coma, and she died in hospital on 10 May 2024. He has been charged with manslaughter, which is just such a disappointment.
Australian Femicide Watch noted that Western Australian authorities have a disgusting record of not releasing details to the public when a woman is killed by a man. Police in Australia are normally expected to announce any death, and especially murders, to the public through a press release. But WA Police never released an announcement of Bronnwyn’s death.
See reports about Bronnywyn Anne O’Gorman.
  41. Lily Galbraith: Lily was 24 years old and was a nurse. She was orginally from Darwin and was living in Adelaide, South Australia. Her boyfriend, Blayde Brummelhuis, said Lily called him “Goose” because they spent so much time laughing together during everyday activities.
Lily Galbraith was murdered on 1 May 2024. Lily was murdered by a former police officer, Bruce Daley (56 years old), who committed the murder-suicide by deliberately driving his car into hers at high speed in Mt-Cootha, QLD. Lily’s friend Emma McLean (23 years old), was in Lily’s car at the time, and was put in critical condition, needing to remain in a medically-induced coma in hospital. Lily and her friend were visiting Brisbane for a wedding when Bruce Daley committed the murder-suicide. A truck driver was also injured by Bruce Daley’s murder-suicide.
This should have been prevented. Bruce Daley was known to Queensland Police to be mentally unstable BECAUSE the Queensland Police made him medically retire from the police service in 2014. THEY KNEW. Bruce Daley had even posted on social media about wanting to kill himself. You can’t tel me no one saw that. Queensland Police did not act until Bruce killed Lily Galbraith. But all Queensland Premier Steven Miles could say was, “My thoughts are with families of those affected — it’s an awful, awful crash.” No, Steven. It wasn’t a crash. It was murder.
    See reports about Lily Galbraith.
  42. Gretl Petelczyc: Gretl was 18 years old and studying at the University of Western Australia, and she loved water polo. She lived in Floreat, Perth, Western Australia (WA), with her mum, Jennifer. Gretl’s friend, Maddie Hillbeck, says, “We all need to come together and make the change that Jenny and Gretl would have wanted to see.”
Gretl Petelczyc was murdered on 24 May 2024, together with her mum, Jennifer Petelczyc (below). Mark Bombara (63 years old) was looking for his ex-wife Rowena, and since he didn’t find her, he killed these two innocent women instead. When police arrived, he committed suicide rather than face charges for murdering them.
This should have been prevented. See further details below, at Jennifer Petelczyc’s name, about how WA Police and the WA Police Minister failed Gretl and Jennifer so badly.
See reports about Gretl’s murder, and reports of police negligence.
  43. Jennifer Petelczyc: Jennifer was loved by everyone from family to friends (“they were so generous and always had open arms to everyone”) and neighbours (“a beautiful mother, a truly beautiful lady”). Jennifer’s brother said, “She was trying to protect her friend who she went to school with. Jennifer’s always been like that.” Jennifer was 59 years old and lived in Floreat, Perth, Western Australia (WA), with her two daughters.
Jennifer Petelczyc and her daughter, Gretl Petelczyc (recorded separately in this list), were murdered on 24 May 2024. Mark James Bombara (63 years old) was looking for his ex-wife Rowena, and since he didn’t find her, he killed these two innocent women instead. When police arrived, he took the coward’s route and committed suicide rather than face charges for murdering them. Jennifer was Rowena’s friend, and Rowena had called her earlier that day warning her to be careful because Mark was hunting for Rowen and their daughter, Ariel.
This should have been prevented. WA Police knew that Mark Bombara was violent, had guns on him, and was actively stalking his ex-wife. Rowena and Ariel Bombara had fled their home on 28 March 2024, knowing Mark was hunting for them. They reported Mark Bombara’s violence to the police 3 times between 30 March and 2 April. They told police about the 13 guns Mark Bombara owned, and the fact that he had his Glock pistol with him. But WA Police refused to provide a domestic violence protection order. Even without a protection order, the WA Police had the legal right to remove his guns from him under the WA Firearms Act legislation because of the risk of him using those guns to commit violence, but the police did nothing. It’s insane.
Rowena and Ariel were ignored by 5 different male police officers, and Ariel has been especially courageous about demanding answers and change from the WA police and the WA government. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the police made incident reports for Rowena and Ariel and made referral to DFV support agencies, but claimed the family didn’t meet the “thresholds” for a 3-day temporary protection order. In contrast, WA Police Minister Paul Papalia claims the police did NOT have ANY records of a DFV complaint before the shooting, which appears to be a bald-faced lie. The WA Police can’t have it both ways.
To make matters even worse, after Jennifer and Gretl were dead, WA Police then failed to tell her family members who called for information. ACAB.
See reports about Jennifer’s murder, and reports of police negligence.
  44. Tash Raven: Tash was the business manager of a thriving nail salon and also worked at Anytime Fitness. She was a loving mother and friends called her “the life of the party”. She was 43 years old and lived in Urangan, Hervey Bay, QLD.
Tash Raven was murdered on 25 May 2024. Brett David Eddy (41 years old) has been charged with her manslaughter, dangerous driving, and disrespecting the deceased. Tash’s brother has set up a GoFundMe to raise money to take care of Tash’s son Axl (15 years old).
This should have been prevented. Before Brett David Eddy hit Tash at 200km/hour in a 60 zone, murdering her, residents in the area say they contacted the police multiple times about him making noise and driving dangerously around the area. He didn’t even have a driver’s licence. If Queensland Police had come to the area earlier, and arrested him for dangerously driving without a licence, Tash Raven might still be alive.
    See reports about Tash Raven.
  45. Woman, NT: This mum of three children was a First Nations woman, so we don’t say her name anymore out of respect for her spirit. She was training in the ADF’s North West Mobile Force, and she was a respected and loved community member. She was visiting Darwin to attend Sorry Business for a relative who had died a few weeks ago. Her homeland was Maningrida, and she lived in Katherine, Northern Territory (NT).
This mum died on 1 June 2024. A man has been accused of rape and murder of her.
See reports about this First Nations woman’s life.
  46. Woman, NT, 36: This 36-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was attacked on 11 July in Katherine, Northern Territory (NT), and died in hospital in Darwin just days later, on 22 July 2024.
She was strong, and brave, and clever. After she was brutally attacked in a public place by her ex-partner (45 years old), she escaped and phoned emergency services, and then found a house to hide in.
Her ex-partner was charged with recklessly endangering life and intending to cause serious harm … but not manslaughter or murder, which makes no sense. It was a deliberate attack, and the woman died as a direct result of these injuries, which are the legal requirements for manslaughter and/or murder. Remember that this man attacked his ex-partner in a public space, on Railway Terrace, meaning that he was confident he would get away with it. Detective Senior Sergeant Jon Beer said he was confident this was a “serious act of domestic violence”. But because of these light charges, in effect, he has gotten away with it. It’s a complete injustice.
Unfortunately, the brief details of this woman’s death were all I was able to find out about her and her life.
See reports about this woman in the NT.
  47. Wanda Dorothy Uhle: Wanda was 78 years old and lived in Gordon, ACT, and tragically, that is all I have been able to find online about her life and who she was. (Please let me know if you can tell me more.) Wanda Dorothy Uhle was murdered on 2 June 2024. Her husband, Manfred Uhle (86 years old), has been charged with murdering her. He drove to a relative’s house and confessed to them. However, he may get away with murdering Wanda because of a mental health claim. Make it make sense.
Disgustingly, the Canberra Times ran the headline “Nan is at peace”. To call Wanda’s murder peaceful is absolutely unconscionable – do better, Canberra Times.
See reports about Wanda Dorothy Uhle.
  48. Lois Witt: Lois loved to take care of her friends, who said she was looking forward to living in a house where she could watch birds from her balcony. Lois was 77 years old and lived on the Gold Coast, QLD, for many decades before moving in with her sister, Val, and her nephew, Martin Fowler, in Albany Creek, QLD.
Lois Witt was watching TV with her sister Val when she was murdered on 2 June 2024. Her nephew, Martin Fowler (46 years old) killed her, then committed suicide to avoid facing charges for murdering her.
This should have been prevented. Queensland Police said there had been plenty of quote “family arguments” before this, and they had been called out to Lois’s home multiple times in the week she was murdered, but Lois and Val didn’t have a DV protection order against him at the time. So… What a cop-out. Literally. After all these call-outs, Queensland Police let Martin Fowler keep his gun licence, and his gun, although they legally could have taken it away.
Then the Queensland Police had the gall to say, “There is no threat to the community.” That is simply untrue, if you are a woman who knows or encounters any unhinged males. And let’s face it, these unhinged males are everywhere!
    See reports about Lois’s murder.
  49. Evette Verney: Evette was 61 years old and lived in Byford, Western Australia. I apologise that I couldn’t find out more about her life, because her life mattered.
Evette Verney was murdered on 2 June 2024. Her son, Harley Jefferies (33 years old), has been charged with murdering his mother. A young girl relative who witnessed the murder ran to the neighbours to get help.
A report by Professor Silke Meyer, Leneen Forde Chair in Child and Family Research, shows mothers killed by their own sons (“matricide”) is common where “intersectional invisibility” means the local community doesn’t take good enough care of them, e.g. middle-aged or elderly mothers, mothers with disabilities, black and minority ethnic families, and mentally ill sons.
    See reports about Evette Verney.
  50. Coral Seinor: Coral was 83 years old and lived in Jurien Bay community, Western Australia. These two great friends ran a business together, raised their kids together, and started the Jurien Bay branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA). Coral and Thelma were “treasured icons” who worked “tirelessly” for others, and were “always smiling, always ready to share their knowledge”. The CWA honoured them as “the backbone” of the community. These two besties were on their way to the CWA Centenary celebrations when this man killed them.
Coral Seinor and her friend Thelma Clausen (below) were killed on 7 June 2024, when Shannon Cox (38 years old) crashed his car into theirs on the highway in Cooljarloo, WA. He has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, and causing injuries to a 12-year-old girl.
Personally, I was disgusted to see the media featuring more photos of Shannon Cox (apparently famous for playing footy, ew), than of these two precious women, “two of the best”, who had contributed far more to the community each week than he ever could have when he was kicking balls for years.
    See reports about Coral Seinor.
  51. Thelma Clausen: Thelma was 82 years old. For more detail about Coral and Thelma’s beautiful friendship, see Coral’s story (above).
Thelma Clausen and her friend Coral Seinor (above) were killed on 7 June 2024, after a lifetime of serving their communities as business leaders and CWA volunteers. Shannon Cox (38 years old) crashed his car into theirs on the highway, and was charged with killing them.
    See reports about Thelma Clausen.
  52. Natalie Jane Frahm: Natalie was a business owner, a loving mum, and a martial arts lover. She was 34 years old and lived in South Mackay, QLD.
Natalie Jane Frahm was murdered on 19 June 2024 while sitting in her car outside her home. Natalie’s neighbour, Ryan Cole (31 years old), has been charged with murdering her and attempting to murder the bystanders. Two teenage girls who were in the car with Natalie escaped and called for help. A 66-year-old man who attempted to help Ms Frahm was also injured by Ryan Cole, but is believed to have recovered.
    See reports about Natalie’s murder.
  53. Annette Kiss: Annette was a business owner, a mum to 2 sons, and she loved dogs. She was 53 years old and lived in Russell Lea, NSW. She’s a 55-year-old business owner, a mum, a friend – she is so many things.
Annette Kiss was murdered on 27 June 2024. Annette’s housemate, Benjamin Art (42 years old), was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murdering her.
    See reports about Annette Kiss.
  54. Carolyn McCarthy: First Nations leader Carolyn McCarthy was an active supporter for victims and survivors of domestic violence, and a dedicated member of the Chjowai Housing Co-Operative Society. She had strong connections to the Mamu, Bar-Barrum and Yidinji peoples, loved her local community, and was always a part of events like NAIDOC Week. Carolyn was 51 years old, was a mum of 4 children, and lived in Innisfail, QLD. A relative said, “She showed respect and was a good role model for the younger ones. … She was a beautiful soul and we are still really baffled.”
Carolyn McCarthy was murdered on 28 June 2024. Her partner, Floyd Tomarra (51 years old), was charged with murdering her.
(Carolyn McCarthy was a First Nations woman, but I’ve seen her name being used everywhere, and so because I couldn’t find any direct guidance about this, I’m assuming her local community has okayed this. If I’m wrong, I apologise deeply; please let me know so I can fix it.)
    See reports about Ms McCarthy.
  55. Sarah Miles: Sarah’s family said she was smart, compassionate, talented, and a loving mum of 3 children. She was 40 years old and lived in Casino, NSW. Sarah’s son Shayden Miles said, “My mother was a very strong person, [a] fighter always to the end. I’m so proud of her and I’m proud, I’m proud to have her as my mother and I’m proud to have been her son.”
Sarah Miles was murdered on 29 June 2024. Her partner, Dwayne John Creighton (31 years old), has been charged with murdering her.
This should have been prevented. NSW Police took an hour – 57 minutes – to respond when Sarah’s neighbour, Beth Ferguson, phoned 000 because Sarah was screaming in pain. Sarah’s home was only a 3-minute drive from Casino Police Station. But NSW Police let Sarah suffer for 55 minutes before they even recorded the call-out, and then another 2 and a bit minutes before they arrived at Sarah’s home. Sarah’s son Shayden said, “It’s not just a loss, it’s also dealing with the fact that she was waiting for an hour on the floor and that is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley said there would be an independent critical incident investigation by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) and the NSW Coroner, about why it took NSW Police an hour to visit Sarah’s home. I couldn’t find the results of that investigation, so I’ll believe it when I see it. In fact, Greens Member of the NSW Legislative Council and justice spokesperson Sue Higginson points out that Richmond Police only investigated 19 out of 67 misconduct complaints made against them in 2023.
    See reports about Sarah Miles.
  56. Annette Brennan: Annette was an English teacher, and an English tutor for international migrants and refugees. She was 67 years old and lived in Coolaroo, Victoria. She had travelled and worked in China, and she was a Collingwood fan.
Annette Brennan was murdered on 2 July 2024. Stephen Fleming (45 years old), who knew Annette, has been charged with murdering her. He put her body in the trash, and she was found by staff at a waste management facility in Epping.
    See reports about Annette Brennan.
  57. Rehana Parvin: Rehana ran a fish and grocery business in Australia, had five children, and was a “brilliant student”. She had won many academic scholarships in Bangladesh and had been studying here in Australia before she had her children. Rehana had “a big heart” and “always helped others”. Her mother told reporters, “She had no arrogance. She was a very polite person. She never quarrelled with others.” She was 38 years old and lived in Australia, but when she first went missing, she was on a trip to her hometown in Bangladesh with her teenage daughter. During this trip, Rehana experienced a pregnancy loss when she was 4 months pregnant, and was treated at a Bangladeshi hospital on 3 July 2024. Tragically, that was the last time her family heard from her.
Investigations showed Rehana was murdered on 5 July 2024. On 31 August, Rehana’s mother, Ms Akter, told local police her daughter was missing, likely kidnapped, and gave them the details of four credible suspects. Rehana’s body was found in September, as she had been transferred to a different Bangladeshi hospital.
Suspects include Rehana’s estranged husband, Awlad Hossain. Mr Hossain travelled to Bangladesh on 29 June, and returned to Australia without Rehana on 13 July. Police have applied for an arrest warrant; I was unable to ascertain whether he has been arrested or charged.
    See reports about Rehana Parvin.
  58. Woman, 30: This unnamed woman was 30 years old. I’m told she died in July 2024, and I am looking for further details.*
  59. Nunia Kurualeba: Nunia was a clever, creative woman who loved posting on Tiktok, and she’d just posted a selfie hours before she was murdered. She was 21 years old, was born in Fiji, and lived in Kingswood, Sydney, NSW. Her dad was a respected police officer, and when Nunia was 14 years old, she said she wanted to follow in his footsteps and become a police officer. She was a loved daughter, sibling, and friend.
Nunia Kuraleba was murdered on 8 July 2024. Her partner, Jeremaia Tuwai (21 years old), has been charged with murdering her. They had only been dating for a few months.
    See reports about Nunia Kurualeba.
  60. Lucita Barquin Cortez: Lucita was 55 years old and was proud to be an Australian citizen.
Lucita Barquin Cortez was murdered on 10 July 2024. Her husband David Fisk, and Lucita’s daughter-in-law Mary Jane Cortez were also murdered. They were killed while on holidays in a hotel in Tagaytay, in the Phillipines. The male suspect, from Batangas, has been charged with murdering them. His name was not released to Australian press, although Tagaytay Mayor Mr Tolentino apologised to the families and pressured the police until the arrest was made. Lucita was buried with her family in her hometown.
See reports about Lucita Barquin Cortez.
  61. Girl, 5m: This young girl was only 5 months old when a man killed her. I’m told she died in July 2024, and am looking for further details.*
  62. Lolene Whitehand: Lolene was the carer for her sister and her husband before his death, and she was known for being kind and happy. She was 85 years old and lived in West Footscray, Victoria.
Lolene Whitehand disappeared on 12 July 2024. She was murdered and her body was found on 14 July 2024 in the Maribyrnong River, Flemington. Two people who knew Lolene – a 15-year-old young man, and a 49-year-old woman (Milena Bogojevska) – were both suspected of murdering her, but only the woman has been charged.
    See reports about Lolene Whitehand.
  63. Kierra-Lea Jensen: Kierra-Lea worked with her dad, was a mum of 2 children, was helping raise her stepson, and was a keen animal lover. She was 28 years old and lived in Leichhardt, Ipswich, QLD.
Kierra-Lea Jensen was murdered on 15 July 2024. Her partner, Kitchel Shillingsworth (36 years old), has been charged with murdering her.
This should have been prevented. Detective Acting Superintendent Garry Watts revealed that QLD Police visited Kierra-Lea’s home the week before Kitchel Shillingsworth killed her, because of reports he had violently assaulted her. But QLD Police did not think anything was wrong, so they did not act.
    See reports about Kierra-Lea Jensen.
  64. Kiesha Thompson: Kiesha was 23 years old, the mum of a beautiful young daughter, and lived in Daisy Hill, Logan City, QLD. Kiesha’s brother said, “My sister Kiesha had nothing short of a difficult life but in the past couple years, she worked tirelessly to create the best life for not only her but her child, who is the absolute light of her life.”
Kiesha Thompson was murdered on 19 July 2024. Both Kiesha’s ex-partner, Tyler James (27), and Larissa Sant (24), Tyler James’s new girlfriend, were charged with murdering Kiesha.
    See reports about Kiesha Thompson.
  65. Ms Galminda, NT: Ms Galminda’s full name is not used because she was a First Nations woman, so her name should not be spoken under Sorry Business protocols. Ms Galminda was 36 years old, was a mum of 3 children, and lived in the remote community of Maningrida, Northern Territory (NT), where she was expected to become a future community leader. She was a defence recruit who was training in the ADF’s North West Mobile Force. She was a Njebbenna woman descended from the Marbarnad Marro clan, who are traditional owners of Maningrida.
Ms Galminda was murdered on 1 June 2024. Bruno Bukulatjipi (43 years old), knew Ms Galminda, and has been charged with murdering and raping her. Ms Galminda was in Coconut Grove in Darwin to attend Sorry Business after the death of a relative, when Bruno Bukulatjipi raped and killed her.
    See reports about Ms Galminda.
  66. Frances Crawford: Frances was a respected psychologist in Toowoomba. She was a loving mother of 3 adult daughters, devoted to her community, and deeply spiritual. She was 49 years old and lived in Lockyer Valley, QLD. Her grieving family said in a statement, “She cared deeply about the people around her and put their needs before her own. … A beautiful soul inside and out.”
Frances Crawford was murdered on 30 July 2024. Her husband, Robert Crawford, was cheating on her with relationships with multiple women all over the world and throughout Australia. He tried to cover up murdering Frances as a “lawnmower accident”. He is being investigated for murder, but has not been charged yet at the time of writing (7 October 2024).
This should have been prevented. Police had visited previously multiple times, for reports of domestic violence by Robert Crawford against Frances, but they didn’t arrest him or charge him. They waited until she was dead.
    See reports about Frances Crawford.
  67. Xiaoting Wang: Xiaoting was studying digital technologies here, as an international student from China who was a dear friend to many in the local community. She was 21 years old and lived in Burwood, NSW. In the weeks before she was killed, Xiaoting had been speaking hopefully with friends about her plans for the future, including leaving the abusive relationship she was currently in.
Xiaoting Wang was murdered on 12 August 2024. Her partner (21 years old) killed her, then committed suicide to avoid facing the consequences.
See the reports of Xiaoting Wang’s murder and the memorial vigil.
  68. Woman, NT, 43: This woman’s name is not used because she was a First Nations woman, so her name should not be spoken under Sorry Business protocols. She was 43 years old and lived in Malak, Northern Territory (NT). She had told neighbours and friends that she was trying to leave her partner.
She was murdered on 21 August 2024. Her partner, Desmond Frankie Booth (57), was charged with murdering her, and with breaching a domestic violence order.
This was preventable. NT Police did not respond at all to a 000 welfare call from social workers 9 hours before Desmond Frankie Booth murdered her. Worse, they lied about it, saying the first 000 call came from her family at midnight, until they were forced to admit the truth 2 WEEKS LATER. This beautiful woman had a 20-year protection order against Desmond Frankie Booth. NT Police knew he was violent, and that she was vulnerable. She would still be alive if they had done their jobs.
Tragically, this woman was killed on the very date the Australian government delivered their first year’s update on their magical National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children. The update was damning. Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commissioner Micaela Cronin said, “Our service systems are overwhelmed, stretched beyond capacity, they are struggling to hold onto staff and they are at wits’ end.”
See reports about this NT woman.
  69. Jasmine Lee Sloane: Jasmine was a loving mum and a dear friend to many. She was 35 years old and lived in Mitchelton, QLD.
Jasmine Lee Sloane and her partner Stephen John Peters (61 years old) were murdered on 28 August 2024 in their home. Steven Mataka Henry (41 year olds) is charged with murdering Jasmine and Stephen through reckless indifference. Steven Mataka Henry gave the pair drugs that caused an adverse reaction, and did not seek medical help for them. A child in the home had to call 000 for an ambulance.
See reports about Jasmine’s life and about Jasmine’s murder. The family is fundraising to cover her funeral costs in Mitchelton.
  70. Suzy Rackemann: Suzy was loved by family, friends, and her community, who said she was “fun and lovely”, had a kind heart, a fun-loving attitude, and always showed such care for women experiencing cancer. When she was killed, she was fundraising for the 142km walk she was doing in September 2024 for pancreatic cancer research, in memory of her mother, Ena (“Dragon”). I believe Suzy was a medical practice manager in North Brisbane.
Suzy was 61 years old and lived in Upper Kedron, Brisbane (QLD). Suzy Rackemann was murdered on 17 August 2024, and her own son, Conor Robert Rackemann (29 years old) was charged with killing her. She died in the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital on 26 August 2024, from severe head injuries. Police ruled this a domestic violence murder.
The court made a point of recording that this man was on a disability pension. Why? Let’s be clear: that’s NOT a good reason to kill your own mother. Renowned journalist Jane Gilmore has condemned the media’s most insensitive reports about Suzy, such as the Brisbane Times, which made Suzy’s death all about the life of her brother. Her brother – although he was devastated by her death, and fundraised for her funeral – should not have been the focus of media reporting. Thanks to Jane Gilmore for my favourite series of all time, #fixedit.
  71. Ms Morgan: Ms Morgan was a First Nations woman, so her full name is not spoken under Sorry Business protocols. She was a mum, and she was a loved and respected member of the local community. She was 39 years old and lived in Palm Island, QLD.
Ms Morgan was murdered on 1 September 2024. Her ex-partner (36 years old) has been charged with murdering her.
    See reports about Ms Morgan.
  72. Woman, NT: This woman, whose name and age I could not find, was murdered on 16 September 2024 in Katherine, Northern Territory (NT). A man (49 years old) was arrested for murdering her.
I could not believe how hard it was to find out anything more about the life of this woman, or the progress of the case against her killer. If you know anything more, please tell me. Otherwise, I’ll hope that this silence is due to the media respecting her family’s wishes for privacy after this tragic loss.
The Northern Territory has the highest domestic and family violence rates in Australia, 7 times higher than the national average.
See reports about this NT woman.
  73. Natalie Galcsik: Natalie was 46 years old and was a dedicated mum and business owner. She loved horses and dogs, and was a beloved member of the local equestrian comunity. She lived in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, NSW, where she had owned and run Unlax @ Hunter Valley, a boutique four-star bed-and-breakfast, for 7 years. She was involved in reiki and other spirituality and holistic wellbeing practices. Tragically, her 7-year-old son had died on 18 August 2023.
Natalie Galcsik was murdered on 27 September 2024. Her husband, Steven Galcsik (47 years old), has been charged with murdering her. Natalie’s adult son, who told the police to do a welfare check for Natalie, has applied for an AVO (a type of DV protection order) against Steven Galcsik.
This should have been prevented. NSW Police claims Steven Galcsik had no police record of domestic violence (as if that means anything), but the media said police were investigating “marital issues” after he murdered Natalie. As Sherele Moody points out, “Just because police say there was no domestic violence, doesn’t actually mean there was no domestic violence.” “Marital issues” often means emotional abuse, coercive control, financial control, and more.
    See reports about Natalie Galcsik.
  74. Christine Mills: Christine was 58 years old and enjoyed a quiet life in a holiday park on the beaches of Coffs Harbour, NSW.
Christine Mills was murdered on 2 October 2024. Her son, Zachary Mills (30 years old) has been charged with murdering her, and with breaching DV protection orders.
This was preventable. Christine told NSW Police she was afraid for her safety, and that she had an AVO (a type of DV protection order) against Zachary Mills. NSW Police also knew that she had some health conditions, making her especially vulnerable to violence. On 30 September 2024, Zachary Mills breached the AVO. Christine phoned NSW Police and asked for their help and protection. Two days later, Zachary Mills murdered her.
    See reports about Christine Mills.
  75. Sistagirl, NT, 37: This Tiwi Island woman was 37 years old. She was a trans woman, and her life mattered. Her experiences as a sister-girl (sistagirl) and a woman mattered. I am looking for more details about Sistagirl’s life.
Sistagirl was murdered on 7 October 2024 in Darwin, NT. A man in her own family has been charged with murdering her.
    See reports about Sistagirl.
  76. Woman, NT, 22: This woman, whose name I could not find, was 22 years old and lived in Katherine, Northern Territory (NT).
This woman was murdered on 30 September 2024 through domestic violence. Her 36-year-old partner has been arrested for murder.
See reports about this NT woman.
  77. Woman, QLD, 41: This unnamed woman was 41 years old and lived in Vincent, QLD. She died in hospital on 22 October 2024, three days after she was critically injured.
A man was accused of grievous bodily harm (domestic violence) against her. It was expected that Queensland Police would upgrade the charge to murder through court proceedings in December 2024, and I am trying to find out whether they did in fact do this.
This was preventable. Queensland Police knew of this man’s record for assaulting women and children. He previously assaulted his pregnant partner in her stomach, likely with intent to harm their unborn child. He had also deliberately broken another woman’s leg. After attempting to murder an unborn child and causing serious bodily harm to multiple women, WHY was he still walking the streets, free to harm other women?
See reports about this QLD woman.
  78. Cheryl Davidson: Cheryl loved life, and she lived it to the fullest. Friends say she had a great sense of humour and loved a laugh over a beer. Cheryl was 57 years old and lived in Gunnedah, NSW.
Cheryl Davidson was murdered on 25 October 2024. Her son has been charged with murdering her.
Cheryl loved her family. She spent decades feeding, housing, educating, cleaning, and loving her son … and her reward was that he deliberately killed her.
    See reports about Cheryl Davidson.
  79. Nikkita Azzopardi: Nikkita was an accountant and a woman of colour with a loving family. When she didn’t show up to the family barbecue that day, and wasn’t responding to calls and texts, her family came to check whether she was okay, and they found she had been murdered. She was 35 years old and lived in South Morang, Victoria. She had been with her current partner for 2 years when he decided to murder her.
Nikkita Azzopardi was murdered at home between 26 and 28 October 2024, by her male partner, Joel Micallef (33 years old). He also illegally prevented first aid, by lying to her family when they arrived, telling them she was sleeping, and by locking and barricading doors with chairs to prevent rescue. Since being charged with murder, he has hidden in a cowardly manner in hospital to avoid attending his court dates or taking accountability for his evil actions.
    See reports about Nikkita Azzopardi.
  80. Mavis Stanley: Mavis was a Wiradjuri (First Nations) woman, and she was 47 years old. She was going home to Wellington to care for her sick mother when she was killed and her body was dumped.
Mavis Stanley was murdered on 29 October 2024, in Bourke, NSW. Her male partner (49 years old) was charged with murdering her.
Although Mavis was a First Nations woman, I’m using her name because her friends shared her name on social media and the National Indigenous Times used her name.
    See reports about Mavis Stanley.
  81. Warlpiri woman, NT, 42: This Warlpiri (First Nations) woman was 42 years old and lived in the remote community of Lajamanu, Northern Territory (NT). Her loved ones and the entire communities of Lajamanu and Yuendumu mourn her deeply. A large crowd of concerned friends and family gathered around the local clinic to care for her critical injuries, but sadly, she died of these wounds.
This unnamed Warlpiri woman was murdered on 14 October 2024. Her husband, Bohas White (46 years old), was arrested after stabbing her, but the NT Police said the murder charge was still “pending”. Why? We don’t know.
See reports about this Warlpiri woman.
  82. Isla Bell: Isla was a creative, loving 19-year-old when she was killed by a group of callous men. Her mum said Isla had struggled with complex illnesses but was determined to live well. She said, “I was so proud of your choices this year, your strength to endure despite your suffering. All you ever wanted was to create, make and nurture life, to love and be loved.” Isla disappeared from her family home on 4 October 2024.
Isla Bell was murdered on 7 October 2024 in St Kilda East, Victoria. One man was charged with murdering her; a second man was charged with “assisting”; and a third man was released.
    See reports about Isla Bell.
  83. Woman, 40: This unnamed woman was 40 years old. ****
  84. Woman, 62: This unnamed woman was 62 years old. ****
  85. Woman, 47: This unnamed woman was 47 years old. ****
  86. Rosemary Franzidis: Rosemary was a much-loved wife, proud mother of 3 children, and grandmother to 3 little ones. She was 69 years old and lived in Queensland. She was loved by many friends, family, and her church community, in South Africa, the UK, the USA, and Australia. Her family told press that Rosemary “cherished her family more than anything in the world”. They added, “Everybody who met Rose felt her love, kindness and generosity.”
Rosemary Franzidis was killed on 7 November 2024 by a 16-year-old boy, who has been charged with manslaughter and other crimes. He drove a stolen car into her vehicle in Murrumba Downs, QLD, recklessly killing Rosemary when she was just minutes from home. A 35-year-old woman was also charged with armed robbery, for aiding the young man in this car-jacking and manslaughter.
    See reports about Rosemary Franzidis.
  87. Christine Barrett: Christine was 70 years old, and lived in a unit block in South West Rocks, NSW.
Christine Barrett was murdered at home on 7 November 2024. A male relative, Glen Harold Murdoch (59 years old) has been charged with murdering her.
Almost no details of her life or her death have been mentioned by the media, which I find very disappointing.
    See reports about Christine Barrett.
  88. Shirley So: Shirley was a 50-year-old mum. She was brave, and strong. She fought back when her male partner, Darren Berry (53 years old), attacked her in a hotel room in Penrith, NSW. And she successfully left a number of injuries on his arms and hands. Well done, Shirley.
Shirley So was murdered on 10 November 2024. Darren Berry was charged with murdering her.
This was preventable. Darren Berry has a long, recorded history of violence against women, and an extensive record of publicly expressing misogyny, transphobia, and homophobia.
    See reports about Shirley So.
  89. Woman, NT: This First Nations woman was viciously assaulted in October in Katherine, NT, and died in hospital on 14 November 2024. Her male partner was charged with assault and causing grievous bodily harm. I am looking for further details.
See reports about this NT woman.
  90. Vicky Van Aken (Vicky Apostolopoulos): Vicky died in the act of bravely protecting an injured child from her violent neighbour, Mick Zaric. Vicky was an awesome mum of 2 children, and she was 51 years old when she was killed. Her family, friends, and colleagues all miss her greatly. One friend said, “She was such a family person, just invested in her kids, her nephews, everyone around her. She was always present at everything.”
Vicky Van Aken (nee Apostolopoulos) was murdered on 16 November 2024. Her male neighbour, Milorad “Mick” Zaric (** years old), has been charged with murdering her and injuring his son. This was no accident; Vicky was not in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mick Zaric was angry at his 17-year-old son for being friends with Vicky’s children, so he knocked on Vicky’s door, attacked his own son, then killed Vicky for daring to try to stop him. On her own doorstep, in front of her children.
See reports about Vicky Apostolopoulos (Vicky Van Aken).
  91. Christine Dawson: Christine’s family and friends said she “always had a beautiful soul” who adored her daughter and doted on all her grandchildren. Christine’s daughter told the press, “My mum was a very pure person. She would give you her last cent.” She was 66 years old and lived in Maroubra, NSW.
Christine Dawson was murdered on 18 November 2024. Her ex-partner, Shane Tucker (55 years old), was charged with breaching the DV protection order she had against him, and was refused bail. But he was not immediately charged with Christine’s death, which seems fishy. Task Force Nain was investigating her murder at the time of writing.
    See reports about Christine Dawson.
  92. Yuko: Yuko was a business woman working in one of Australia’s most dangerous industries (adult entertainment and sex work). She was 62 years old and lived in Footscray, Victoria. Like all businesspeople, she deserved respect. And like all workers in Australia, she had the legal right to be safe at work. But unlike women working in other industries, her death did not get much attention from either the police or the media.
Yuko was murdered on 27 November 2024 at her own home. Michael Chalmers (35 years old) was charged with murdering her.
    See reports about Yuko.
  93. Sandra Dobrila: Sandra was a customer service manager, and her friends said she was “a beautiful, kind soul”. One friend remembered her having “the most beautiful aura, spreading love and kindness wherever she went”, which I thought was so lovely. I’m always amazed when someone who works in customer service can manage to not become wounded or hardened by the work.
She was 41 years old and lived in Mordialloc, Victoria.
Sandra Dobrila was murdered on 28 November 2024 in her own home. The man who killed her (38 years old) had only met her a few months ago, and may have been dating her at the time. Instead of facing accountability for killing her, he then killed himself. I haven’t been able to find his name, so it would seem like he really has gotten away with murdering this beautiful soul.
    See reports about Sandra Dobrila.
  94. Ms Slater: Ms Slater was a “beautiful, caring” mum of 8, says her family, and a proud Yamitji (First Nations) woman, so I’m not sharing her full name out of respect. She was 47 years old and lived in Waggrakine, Western Australia (WA).
Ms Slater was murdered on 29 November 2024. Her son, Adrian Terrance Ryan (21 years old), was charged with murdering her.
This should have been prevented. Ms Slater had repeatedly asked the police for help. As Ronnie Ryan (Ms Slater’s partner) said so eloquently, “This justice system failed her every time, and it’s going to keep failing until we change it. … The system has to change … to protect the innocent. Would you rather the prisons full or the morgues full?”
Dalys Ring, Ms Slater’s aunt, agreed: “Our niece has lost her life trying to get support, asking in the courts, asking in our community organisations [and] each time they couldn’t help. Enough is enough, the violence needs to stop. You say you’re going to support our mob … this does not show any support.”
In my opinion, the only reason Ms Slater died – the only reason – is that Australia’s legal system, with its police and courts and judges, cares more about pleasing violent men than it does about protecting vulnerable women. Especially Indigenous Australian women. Because when Adrian Terrance Ryan killed his mum, he had just been released on bail. He had already been charged with violence against her and making threats to kill her. The court deliberately let him follow through on his threats.
Sorry, WHAT? Let that sink in for a moment.
After this man said he would kill his own mum, and hurt her badly, the judge thought that was totally fiiiiine, and let him just waltz out the door of that courthouse.
Who would imagine that this man is a safe person to be out on the streets? All judges in Australia have a legal duty to administer “justice according to law”, and they swear an oath promising to “do right to all manner of people according to law”. Judges also know they have a responsibility to “answer the needs of society”. So from lowly Registrars and Magistrates all the way up to our Chief Justices in the High Court of Australia, all judges are legally required to dispense justice, not freedom for killers. In fact, this decision sounds suspiciously like criminal negligence to my ears, as someone with a law degree…
And what the heck was this defence lawyer doing? Every accused person is entitled to an adequate legal defence, but they’re not entitled to freely commit more crimes. How does this lawyer sleep at night, knowing that a woman is dead because the lawyer applied for bail? All lawyers in Australia have ethical duties and even in the Top End, laywers know they are legally required to be honest. When applying for bail, doesn’t it seem dishonest to pretend your client is not a violent risk to the community?
Australian Femicide Watch calculated that this woman’s murder means that 20% of Australian women killed in 2024 were First Nations people.
    See reports about Ms Slater.
  95. Kim Heang Gau: Kim ran Buzzy Bee’s Burger House in Cambridge Park in Sydney, NSW, with her husband, Hoa Tek Chiem (69 years old). They used to give homeless people food for free, according to locals. Kim was 68 years old, and she was a vital part of her local community for at least 30 years. They had been planning to retire when they were killed.
Their community has made a number of tributes to these selfless souls. “For 29 years, 7 days a week—rain, hail or shine—they dedicated themselves to this place,” one said.
Kim Heang Gau was murdered on 30 November 2024, together with her husband. Their son, Allan Chiem (31 years old), was charged with murdering both of them.
See reports about Heang Kim Gau.
  96. Charlyze (Charli) Hayter: Charli was just 19 years old, and she was an aspiring model who had a loving family and friends. Sadly, the Australian media has spend all its time criticising how she lived and died, instead of criticising her killer, who was her former partner, or trying to help police find the unnamed man who was with her when she died, who had recently been released from prison. No matter why she was at that location, she did not deserve to die.
Charlyze Hayter was killed on 2 December 2024 in Rye, Victoria. She and the ex-convict had gone to the home of her former partner, Jack Gilmore (29 years old), allegedly to rob him, when Jack shot her. The ex-con then shot Jack and fled the scene. Emergency services were sadly unable to keep Jack and Charli alive.
This should have been prevented. Victorian Police knew the former prison inmate who took Charli to Jack’s home, allegedly to rob him, because they had literally put him in jail. They knew he was now free, and that he had been in contact with Charli before he got out. They knew they should keep an eye on him for violent crimes. But did they? Sadly, they didn’t act until it was too late for Charli.
And now the Victorian Police and the media are colluding to make sure his name is not released, while the media blames Charli for his manipulations. It’s not fair, and it’s not just.
See reports about Charlyze Hayter or hear from Charli’s sister on social media.
  97. Woman, NT: This Indigenous woman was murdered on 3 December 2024 in Wanguri, NT. No one was charged with murdering her, although it was immediately ruled a suspicious death. I am looking for more details.
See reports about this NT woman.
  98. Woman, 53: This unnamed woman was 53 years old and died in early December 2024. I am looking for further details.*
  99. Zhuojun (Sally) Li: Sally was 33 years old and lived in Greenacre, NSW. An unknown person murdered her and her husband, Jai-Bao Rex Chen (also 33 years old), near Botany, NSW.
Sally Li was murdered on or before 9 December 2024.
Police have still not found her murderer, as far as I can tell. This is surprising, because Sally’s mum reported her missing weeks earlier. And NSW Police were sure Sally and Rex were not involved in criminal activities, and had probably been killed by someone they owed money to. And Queensland Police even sent Chen’s phone to NSW Police, because the phone had been used (likely by the killer) after their death.
Please contact NSW Police if you have any information about a silver Toyota Avensis, which they say stopped on the northern side of Foreshore Road in Botany on 30 November, between 4am-5am.
See reports about Zhuojun Sally Li.
  100. Khouloud Hawatt: Khouloud was 31 years old and lived in Belmore, NSW with her five young children (6 months to 7 years). She came here from Lebanon with her kids, hoping for a safe life. But instead, she was killed by her violent husband.
Khouloud Hawatt was murdered on 10 December 2024. Her husband, Talaat Hawatt (35 years old), was charged with murdering her, breaching the DV protection order she had against him, using a prohibited weapon, and failing to provide required digital evidence.
This should have been prevented. NSW Police knew Khouloud’s husband was violent, and had included him in subjects of Operation Amarok, a police task force targeting domestic violence perpetrators. But in press releases, Superintendent Waldau (a top NSW Police officer) falsely slandered Khouloud by saying, “It’s very difficult to enforce these things if they don’t get reported, and that’s the biggest thing with domestic violence, is that the victims don’t come forward.” Not only is this an idiotic attitude for cops to promote publicly – but it wasn’t even true! Khouloud already had a DV protection order against Talaat, and police had already charged him for other violent offences, and NSW Police admitted they had been investigating him for alleged terrorist associations. Let alone the fact that Khouloud was having to keep things quiet, to protect her baby and young children from their father! So how dare Superintendent Waldau claim Khouloud should have “come forward”? She did.
She came forward. And the police still let her die.
    See reports about Khouloud Hawatt.
  101. Woman, WA, 32: This Western Australian woman was an Aboriginal Australian, so we’re not sharing her name out of respect. She was 32 years old and lived in Fitzroy Crossing, WA. She had bravely left a domestic violence relationship, and she was trying to recover and rebuild her life. But as one of her family told the press, “He came and found her and finished what he started.”
This WA woman was murdered on 14 December 2024. Her former partner (35 years old) was charged with murdering her.
See reports about this WA woman.
  102. Chloe Jade Mason: Chloe’s family say she was “an incredible woman” and a compassionate spirit who left an “impact on the world” that will be felt for years to come. She was an adored aunty at just 23 years old, and she always made time to support the people she loved. Her family said, “Chloe brought light and laughter into the lives of everyone she encountered. She was a kind and loving young lady, whose spirit was defined by her unwavering compassion and steadfast commitment to standing up for others.”
Her whole community knew her as someone with a fierce loyalty, a nurturing nature, and willingness to defend anyone who was being treated poorly. It was her mission to uplift others and create a sense of belonging wherever she went, inspiring others to see the best in everyone like she did.
She always saw the best in everyone, and inspired others to do the same. So it’s disappointing that Qld Police have refused to look for the best in Chloe’s life, by blaming her for being murdered. At a press conference, Detective Inspector David Harbison said, “Part of the investigation is why she’s come to be in that area.” But as Femicide Watch pointed out, what Qld Police should be asking is, why were the men out on the street at night, with a gun? Why did they shoot her? Chloe knew these men, and was visiting them voluntarily – so why did they choose to assault her, then chase her down, then kill her? But in this misogynistic country, the male-dominated police forces always find a way to blame a woman for the actions of a man.
Chloe Jade Mason was murdered on 22 December 2024 in Caboolture, QLD. Two men, brothers Codye Thomson (29 years old) and Kaine Thomson-Gleeson (32 years old), have been accused of murdering her, but have evaded police, likely by camping out in northern NSW.
You can help Chloe’s family by donating to their GoFundMe. You can also keep an eye out for the brothers’ car, a white Holden Commodore wagon with a QLD licence plate: 953 HO4.
See reports about Chloe Jade Mason.
  103. Kristy Louise Hunter: Kristy was 47 years old and lived in Currimundi, QLD. She was a fighter, born with a congenital heart condition, surviving multiple life-saving surgeries, beating infertility to have a living child, and a cancer survivor. She also had another baby who sadly did not live. Her dad told Femicide Watch that she was desperate to live and be there for her daughter, that she loved horses, and that she had only lost touch with her family in recent years because of her violent partner’s behaviour.
Kristy Louise Hunter was attacked at home on 22 December 2024, and died in Sunshine Coast University Hospital on 23 December 2024. Her partner, Philip Andrew Hunter, was initially charged with assaulting her causing bodily harm, and obstructing police, which was upgraded to acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm after Kristy died. Why wasn’t he charged with murder, when the facts were so clear from the outset?
This should have been prevented. Kristy’s killer had a criminal history, had spent time in jail, and claimed to be in witness protection. So QLD Police knew this man was violent, and court documents showed they were aware he was living with Kristy.
See reports about Kristy Louise Hunter.
  104. Yvonne Beres: Yvonne was a proud mum and grandma, an IT support specialist, a volunteer at a greyhound rescue charity, and a beloved, respected member of her community. Her family said she was a “wonderful” and “generous” person, and she was “always up for a talk and a chat”. She was 59 years old and had just celebrated another Christmas with her adult children, when she was killed by a man.
Yvonne’s relative Stefany Nemet said, “When her only grandson came along, she was glowing. She was besotted over that little boy. We just knew that she would be a wonderful grandma. We saw that love radiant [radiate] through her.”
Yvonne Beres was murdered on 26 December 2024, in Langwarrin, Victoria. Her husband, ***, has been charged with murdering her at home on Boxing Day.

If there are any women killed by a man in 2024 whom I’ve missed in this list, I hope any friends and family feel welcome to reach out to me with details of their loved one.

Violence by men against children in 2024

In addition to the women killed by men, are countless attacks by men against women and children.

In my local area alone, a 9-month-old baby was severely burned in August 2024 when a man threw a hot coffee at them during a picnic in the park. The man who attacked the baby was not found by Queensland Police, and he flew back to China within 12 hours of attacking the baby. I’m told the Chinese press released the man’s name, but I was not able to find it in any Australian media. Thankfully, this baby has survived the attack so far. See reports about the attack against this baby.

Other children were not so lucky. Sherele Moody has reported 10 murders of children in Australia by men in 2024, including:

  • A 7-week-old baby who died in hospital on 30 July 2024, after being attacked by the man who was taking care of them in Parafield Gardens, South Australia (SA). The male has been charged with manslaughter, but has been released on bail. Why?????
  • Rowan Roome, a 2-year-old boy, was killed in May 2024 by his father, James Harrison, who then killed himself to avoid charges. A NSW Health executive leader – also male – then sent an email to NSW Health staff, saying they were saddened that Harrison was dead because he was a “wonderful colleague and beloved friend”. 🤢🤮 You can read more about that disgusting matter in The Guardian.
  • Oscar Hamilton, a 16-year-old boy was killed in Melton, Victoria (VIC), on 24 September 2024. A male was charged with murdering him. See reports about Oscar.
  • Isaac, a 15-year-old boy, was killed on 8 November 2024 in Wilton, NSW. He was camping with friends when a grown man tricked him into entering a vehicle, then killed him and dumped his body. See reports about Isaac.
  • Three siblings – a 5-month-old girl, a 6-year-old boy, and a 2-year-old boy – were killed at Lalor Park, NSW, on 7 July 2024. Their father was charged with murdering them, and with attempting to stop emergency services officers from helping them. Their mum and their sister were also attacked and were in hospital last I heard.
  • A 4-year-old boy died after an attack in Smithton, Tasmania (TAS), on 31 May 2024. A male was charged with manslaughter, and a woman was charged with ill-treating a child.
  • Rowan Roome, 2 years old, was murdered in May 2024 in East Lismore, NSW. His father was charged with murdering him.
  • A 16-year-old boy was killed in April 2024 in Narromine, NSW. A 26-year-old male was arrested.
  • A 7-year-old boy and his mum and dad were killed in February 2024 in North Parramatta, NSW. A man the family knew has been charged with murdering them.
  • A 1-year-old boy was killed in January 2024 in Werribee, Victoria (VIC). A 29-year-old male was charged with murdering him.
